What changes on November 1, 2026

Japan's tax-free shopping becomes a refund.

You pay the 10% consumption tax at the register. Customs confirms your purchases when you leave Japan, and the money comes back afterwards. ¥5,000 before tax, one shop, one day, is the line. Refund Japan does the arithmetic, so you don't have to do it in the aisle.

Rules as published by Japan's National Tax Agency and Japan Tourism Agency. Service fees vary by shop, so figures in the app are estimates.

Numbers we can stand behind.

  • Prices are shown as ranges, because shelf prices differ by store.
  • Refund figures are estimates before service fees, until each shop publishes its terms.
  • We never invent stock counts. If we don't have a store's data yet, the app says so.
  • Rules come from Japan's National Tax Agency, Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan Tax-free Shop Association.

Is the app free?
Yes. Refund Japan is free for travellers.
Which shops are covered?
306 drugstores in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo at launch, across chains such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Sugi, Daikoku, Kokumin, Cocokara Fine and Sundrug. More stores are added as each store's shelf data is completed.
Does the app pay the refund?
No. The shop and its refund operator pay it. The app keeps your list, receipts and estimates in one place, and tells you what to do at the airport.
When does it launch?
October 1, 2026 on iOS and Android. Japan's new refund rules begin November 1, 2026, so you'll have a month to build your list.
